Celebrating Native American Heritage: U.S. Ambassador with Art in Embassies in Mongolia
On November 21, 2024, U.S. Ambassador to Mongolia, Richard Buangan launched a collection of Art in Embassies (AiE) at his residence, in celebration of Native American Heritage month, which has been commemorated every November for several decades in the United States. The AiE program allows U.S. ambassadors to promote cultural diplomacy through visual arts and dynamic artist exchanges, showcasing original works of art donated, lent, and curated at the residences of U.S. ambassadors. The theme of Ambassador Buangan’s AiE collection is Native American and Indigenous Communities in North America. This collection features original works of art by some of the most iconic American artists, including Edward S Curtis (1868-1952) and Karl Bodmer (1809-1893), who have dedicated their lives to documenting the cultures and traditions of native Americans. Ambassador Buangan gave a virtual tour of some of his favorite Native American art within the collection. See here to view the virtual tour. The AiE program engages with over 20,000 participants globally, including artists, museums, galleries, universities, and private collectors. It encompasses over 200 venues in 189 countries. The collection on display at Ambassador Buangan’s residence is one of 60 exhibitions that have been installed in U.S. diplomatic facilities throughout the world. The 2022-2025 Mongolia edition of the AiE program has 19 pieces by 14 artists including unique works of art ranging from 19th century to contemporary artists, and including quilts and photography art by a variety of artists, including a Mongolian-American. Messages from some of the artists will be available on this page as well as on the embassy YouTube and social media channels.
The embassy is grateful for the AiE program, the Art in Res. online platform that made the artwork available, and the artists who sent their personalized greetings for the local audiences.
